Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) is a deciduous shrub growing to 2 m by 3 m. It is in flower in may, the species is hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs), so it is self-fertile. The shrub is tolerant of urban conditions, the berries and leaves are edible, berries have a bitter taste.
Makes an excellent choice as a single specimen plant or massed in hedges.
