The Hot Portugal (Capsicum annuum) is one of the earliest fruiting pepper varieties. After about 70 days after germination, the pods are ripe. The plant produces heavy yields of hot peppers. The peppers are about 15 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, flavor is hot, slightly sweet when mature. They look like the Cayenne (in offer). Hot Portugal Peppers have a heat index at maturity of 5,000 to 30,000 Scoville Heat Units (by comparison, Jalapeno Peppers are 2,500-10,000 SHU). The wrinkled pods color from green to red during ripening. Can be used fresh, pickled, dried or frozen, not good for roasting but good for flavoring, sweetest when mature (red).
